Cupcakes
How do you make something look bigger than it really is? Let’s say you’re taking a picture of a small toy or a marble. What is the first thing you end up doing? Since it’s so small, you lean in or you zoom in, right? Why do you do that?…You want to make it look bigger so the viewer can see the details of the object you are taking a picture of. What’s the technical term I’ve learned for it? Filling the frame.
Why is it significant that we do that? It focuses the viewer on what you would like to show them. It’s one way of limiting the distractions. If you can’t physically move close to the object, use the zoom if possible. Or crop afterwards. But cropping afterwards really doesn’t give that same affect.
There are times where you don’t always want the close up shot. Especially at a gig in which you want at least a shot that captures the whole display. For example, two normal shots of cupcakes at the company. Just wanted to show how much there were.
Now, those were boring to me and “normal”, so I went in closer. Again, you don’t necessarily miss the feeling that there are many cupcakes when you come in close. In a way, you try and make it seem like there’s endless cupcakes. You show the viewer enough so that they get an idea of the pattern and they can imagine it continuing on and on and on. Not only do you get the whole infinity feeling, but you also get a nice bokeh in the background if you opened up your aperture. And the details stand out.
Inspiration:
I Kings 3:13-14: “And I have also given thee that which thou hast not asked, both riches, and honour: so that there shall not be any among the kings like unto thee all thy days. And if thou wilt walk in my ways, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as thy father David did walk, then I will lengthen thy days.”
We sometimes forget the amazing things we have received when looking at the big picture. We might not have the job we wanted, might’ve not been accepted into the college we wanted to go to, not been able to afford the car we wanted…but can we think of some details of life that we should be truly grateful for? Zoom in, and look at find the beauty. It’s there…Maybe we won’t get blessed like King Solomon, but what you do not expect, you will receive.
